Fire Suppression System Malfunction Grounds Spirit Airlines Aircraft in Detroit

Three Spirit Airlines aircraft were temporarily removed from service after a fire suppression system was accidentally triggered at the airline’s maintenance facility at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
According to a statement provided to USA TODAY, Spirit Airlines said, “On July 4, the fire suppression system at our Detroit (DTW) maintenance facility was inadvertently activated, which we believe was caused by nearby lightning.” The airline confirmed that no fire occurred, and no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
While two Spirit Airlines planes were parked inside the maintenance hangar at the time, a third aircraft positioned outside was also taken out of service for safety inspection by the airline’s technical team. Spirit emphasized that there was no impact on flight operations, and passenger service remained uninterrupted.
The Spirit Airlines fire foam incident highlights potential hazards with automated fire suppression systems in aviation maintenance environments. Although no damage was reported, the firefighting foam—known to contain chemicals that may pose environmental concerns—required specialized cleanup. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, certain types of fire suppression foam should be handled with caution.
Spirit Airlines has hired a professional cleanup contractor to remove the foam and ensure the facility is safe for ongoing operations. The airline also thanked Detroit Metro Airport emergency responders for their prompt assistance during the incident.
As the airline continues its internal review, passengers seeking assistance for misplaced belongings during this period can contact the Spirit Airlines lost and found department through official channels at Detroit Metro Airport.
This Detroit airport fire foam discharge adds to broader concerns around automated safety systems at airport maintenance hubs. Spirit Airlines has committed to ensuring all affected aircraft are thoroughly inspected before being returned to service.
