South African Airways is the state-owned flag carrier airline of South Africa.[4] Headquartered in Airways Park at O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, the airline operated a hub-and-spoke network, linking over 40 local and international destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania.[5] The carrier joined Star Alliance in April 2006, making it the first African carrier to sign with one of the three major airline alliances.[6] However the airline started incurring large losses of revenue, operating income and profit. It is now in a state of limbo of whether it is to resume services or shut down entirely, while calls are also being made to privatize the company and keep it running, however, the COVID-19 pandemic is further hampering its recovery.
